At the
beginning of 2006, I purchased Windows XP 64 bit edition to give
it a whirl and see how it would run on my new AMD 64bit machine
I had just built. At that time I was using Norton AV for
protection but found that it was not compatible with this new
operating system, that's when I went looking for an antivirus
that would work for me and found only one at that time...it was
Avast. They were the only ones listed that was ready to meet
this challenge.
I removed
Windows XP 64 bit due to it being so slow and finding 64 bit
drivers for everything was a pain that I could do without
(Windows Vista is just as bad for speed, and you need a hot
machine to run the thing). Anyway, I continued to run Avast
antivirus and found it to be the weapon of choice. Since that
day I have migrated all of my customers to this antivirus
program. It's ease of use is also an added bonus and the fact
that it flags you when program updates are ready to download and
install (the virus definitions library just updates on it's
own). This AV also makes it easy to do a boot scan which will
allow it to find and remove all viruses (even in system
protected directories and files), oh yeah...
that makes this program a must have in my arsenal.
If your tired of the problems you might
have been having with the other antivirus programs, your ready
to switch. The Home Version is free to use, you just have to
register at ALWIL to license it for a year. If you like their
product you can upgrade and purchase the Pro Edition for a very
reasonable cost. Businesses and organizations should only run
the Pro Edition for the extra security it offers.

Now here's another extra feature that's
worth noting. If you decide to buy the Pro Edition, you can
purchase it for 3 years upfront. This will allow you not to have
to worry about downloading or purchasing newer versions, plus
when you buy three years worth of protection, the fine folks at
ALWIL give you a price break and for many of us that's a no brainer...just do the math and you'll agree.

There is also PDA version for those of you
that are toting those things around,
so no worries, they have you covered as well.

For those of you running servers, go to
the Avast website to get you started there,
they also have that covered.
